You know the drill. It’s the show after a PPV, so it’s time to press the reset button, close out some of the older feuds and build some new ones right?
The show started off logically enough with our WWE Champion Triple H coming down to the ring. It made for a slow start as his music played on and on and on. Still at least he declared the “Age of Orton” dead, so that makes me happy.
Unfortunately that lead into a verbal confrontation between Orton and HHH. I’m fine with a free rematch, he’s a capable if uninspired wrestler, but I really just don’t want to hear Orton talk.

Next out were the Divas in.. yup you guessed it… a rematch from Backlash. They always do this and it’s such a lazy way to book the show after a PPV.
JBL wrestled Highlander Robbie in a largely pointless squash match. I suppose it showed that JBL should still be considered a contender, but it wasn’t entertaining at all.
Brian Kendrick and Paul London wrestled Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch. I always enjoy London and Kendrick’s wrestling and this match really didn’t deserve the “boring” chant that the life crowd gave it. The highlight might be after the match though with Trevor Murdoch singing “Friends In Low Places”. Why? No idea, but it was funny and he actually sang it pretty well.
I’m a huge fan of Paul Burchill’s potential but up to now it’s been wasted. He certainly didn’t get to show much range in his match with Super Crazy, but at least he’s getting TV time.
William Regal’s coronation was promoted all night and since he’s usually gold on the mike I was hoping for a good segment here. He was in the middle of a good speech when Mr. Kennedy interrupted. It really seems like they’re building William Regal up big time. Could we see a title shot in his future?
You’ve got to love Santino complaining about fake Italians with fake accents. Santino vs. Cody Rhodes was solid, but Rhodes is such a bland character, it’s hard to care very much. Rhodes won, but like all the other matches tonight, it really didn’t matter very much.
Chris Jericho had HBK on the Highlight Reel again. Two great talkers in the ring at the same time is never going to be bad. I hope this is all leading to a Jericho/HBK feud.
Finally our main event for the night was Triple H vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Championship. When the match finally started there was enough time left for a good TV match so I was hopeful. And that’s what we got. Nothing too dazzling, but a well constructed, almost old fashioned, wrestling match. Some might call it boring, but I like a bit of psychology in the matches. What I really liked is that this was presented as a battle of equals with both wrestlers getting several close counts.
It was a pretty weak show I thought and the final match was easily the best thing about it. I even liked the cliffhanger ending.
