Report: Backstage Update On Edge

Although WWE released photos of Edge undergoing surgery on Tuesday morning in Birmingham, AL with Dr. James Andrews, the company has yet to issue anything new regarding his recovery and how long he is expected out of the ring.

According to sources, people close to Adam “Edge” Copeland say his Achilles tendon surgery went well yesterday and he will be forced to stay off his foot for around 10 to 14 days. After that he will be allowed to start walking while wearing a rehabilitation boot and start rehab around that time.

The initial thought was that WWE wouldn’t acknowledge the injury until at least this coming weekend since Edge appears on Friday Night Smackdown this week and gets involved in the ring, but they decided against that. The next big question is where creative goes from here with Edge as a WWE Unified Tag Team Champion along with Chris Jericho and the two being scheduled for a title defense at Night of Champions between Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase. WWE had long-term plans for Edge and Jericho as a tag team as they had worked on mixing both men’s entrance music and created a dual video for the team. The company was also working to come up with a team name with some ideas being Team Ego and Team Rated Y2J. There was also talk after that ended that early next year we’d see an Edge face turn leading into next years WrestleMania.

The immediate reaction to Edge’s injury within the company was trying to figure out a way to get the belts on Rhodes and DiBiase. Of course, they shot TV before the injury and had Ted DiBiase Sr. announce as the special guest host of Raw that no title matches would be taking place until the Night of Champions PPV on July 26. So it puts them in an interesting situation with TV the next two weeks heading into the PPV. It should be noted that Ted Dibiase Jr. is currently suffering from a shoulder injury at the moment, but the belief is that it isn’t too severe and he was kept out of the ring at a few shows overseas in Australia as a result. The plan at one point within WWE was to have Edge come to TV and hand his belt over to Dolph Ziggler to give Ziggler a rub and a big push teaming with Jericho. However, plans always change in WWE and there have been multiple ideas between now and the next set of TV tapings this Monday and Tuesday so the plan with Ziggler could be off the table. There was also said to be talk of keeping The Colons (Carlito and Primo) together and editing off Carlito’s attack on Primo from Raw this past Monday, but those plans changed since they ended up airing it as is.

12 Rounds Update | TNA Referee Fired | More!

WWE Studios 12 Rounds: Extreme Cut starring John Cena was the number one DVD and Blu-ray in America, according to WWE. They have not disclosed the exact number of copies sold. The movie was released on DVD and Blu-ray last Tuesday with John Cena doing promotional work in California last week to promote the release. The movie includes many new features, including alternate endings, exclusive features and commentary tracks.

Recently released TNA referee Rudy Charles has posted a new blog on his MySpace account. Here are some highlights:

I was recently informed by TNA Wrestling that I was being let go. While I could easily cast blame and be angry at the circumstances, that is not how I want to handle the situation. As a company, TNA is free to run their business as they see fit.

I had been a part of the TNA family since the company began in 2002. On camera, I served as a referee since the first show and was promoted to senior referee a few months later. Behind the scenes, I was as a receptionist/assistant/merchandise guy/you name it for the first year and a half and have served as the Creative Assistant for the last 3? years. During that time, it has been a privilege to serve my co-workers and you, the fans, every time I stepped into the TNA offices, the creative meetings or the six-sided ring. However, that chapter of my life has come to an end and I would like to wish TNA the best in their future endeavors.

While I am still considering all the possibilities that my future holds and exploring options outside of the wrestling business, I am by no means stepping away from the ring. I have talked to several promoters about refereeing for their organizations and am excited about some of the possibilities and challenges that working with an up-and-coming promotion can provide.

He also thanks his family, fans, colleagues and friends for their support

Brock Lesnar Speaks About WWE

Brock Lesnar was recently featured on the front page of the Star Tribune out of Minneapolis, Minnesota in an interview which touched on his life with WWE. The article notes that Lesnar was paid $450,000 by the UFC for his fight with Randy Couture, and by the next day he was back on his 40-acre ranch in Alexandria, Minnesota where he farms corn. The article says he doesn’t own a computer and dislikes attention. Here are some highlights from the interview:

On deciding to sign with WWE: “Here I was wondering how I was going to buy myself a beer and a steak after the national tournament, reaching down and pulling out lint. It was pretty easy. Go with a sure thing. And the sure thing at the time was becoming a pro wrestler.”

On the WWE lifestyle: “You’re in a different city every night. You can be whoever you want to be. You can sit in your hotel room and rot to death or you can go out and … just use your imagination. And I didn’t use my imagination, I was living it. Really, I was a young man, 22 years old. Bank accounts overflowing and everything else.”

The article notes that Lesnar lives an extremely private life, and most locals know to leave him alone. The UFC champ reiterated this by saying “Our dream is just to go home and shut our gate.”

Edge’s Surgery And Return Timeframe

While no one from WWE has made any official comment, people close to Edge say that he came through yesterday’s Achilles tendon surgery as well as they could have hoped for. However, he’ll be forced to completely stay off the foot for 10 to 14 days. After that, he’ll be able to walk while wearing a rehabilitation boot and then begin his rehab. Depending on how the injury heals, he could be out until around the time of Royal Rumble 2010.

It’s interesting that WWE.com noted Edge’s surgery today as he appears on Friday’s episode of SmackDown which was taped last week.

WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan was interviewed this week by The Southtown Star and spoke about a number of topics, including his family, advice for aspiring wrestlers and the upcoming Hulk Hogan Fan Appreciation Day. Some of the Hulkster’s most interesting comments came when the subject of WWE vs. TNA came up.

“I watch both products. (TNA’s) like the little engine that could. Everybody thought they wouldn’t be around for long, and they’ve been chugging along for seven years. They gain momentum every week. They seem to be real fresh. When a lot of guys go over to that side of the fence, they seem to get a spring in their step,” Hogan said. He added that he also watched the WWE product saying, ” Vince is the constant. He’s the standard of excellence. I just love watching his show because you never know what he is going to do. Plus, the production — you can’t even touch his production. It’s so dialed-in. It’s amazing just to see how they put the pieces together.”

“If you look at history, everyone says, ‘History repeats itself.’ With all of the choices in the universe of entertainment, I look at the big package and look at the big picture from 40,000 feet. I see history repeating itself. I see TNA getting strong. I see Vince McMahon being impeccable except for a few little holes in the boat.”

Hogan continued, “TNA is lacking that one momentum-shifting move, that one big name that would even the playing field, the brand (that is) just as powerful as the WWE brand. (TNA’s) lacking the big piece of the puzzle. It wouldn’t matter who did what in the past. It will be a totally even playing field. You never know.”

Matt Hardy Speaks About His Injury

Matt Hardy has posted a new blog on WWE Universe including a graphic photo of his abdomen following surgery on July 2.

Hardy said he knew he was injured half was through last weeks WWE Superstars triple threat match against MVP and Kofi in Green Bay. “The triple threat match against MVP and Kofi in Green Bay was the straw that broke the camel’s back. In a few days, I’m gonna post a tell-all blog on my WWE Universe page and fill everyone in on everything.”

He added, “when Kofi gave me a cross body from the top rope, my intestines basically exploded out of my abdominal wall. And not just in one spot, but in two spots. It was so excruciatingly painful it’s almost hard to describe. It felt like someone took a hot knife and sliced it deeply into my lower abdomen. I did my best to try and get through the remainder of the match, but I knew I was hurt badly. I had to have it fixed, or face major health problems. Problems that could have possibly killed me. So I had do what was good for me, my career, my friends, and my loved ones. And that was get it corrected and fixed.”

Hardy also thanked the WWE, Dr. Pappas, Duke Medical Center, Shannon Moore for their support through the injury.

Graphic photos of his surgery are online. He posted a pic on his MySpace account.

Ricky Steamboat Vs Chris Jericho | Smackdown

Variety reports that Warner Bros. has officially bought Midway Games for $33 million. The TNA video game license was not part of the assets sold to WB though, putting the future of the TNA video game series in some shady ground for now.

The Star Bulletin has an article up about WWE’s house show in Honolulu, Hawaii this weekend and features Chris Jericho commenting on facing Ricky Steamboat on the show. “I’m looking forward to it. I don’t really look at Steamboat as a legend. He’s just a great performer and one of the best of all time. It’d be like playing hockey against Wayne Gretzky — even though he retired years ago, he’s still better than half the people on the ice nowadays. Steamboat, at 55 years old, is still better than 80 percent of our roster … (and) being from Hawaii, it’s a huge deal. It’s going to be very sentimental for him and the fans, and of course I plan to spoil it and stick it in his face and all of the fans when I end the party and annihilate him in front of everyone.”

The following matches are scheduled for tonight’s edition of WWE Smackdown:

- Finlay vs. Ricky Ortiz
- Dolph Ziggler vs. R Truth
- Kane vs. Rey Mysterio
- Hart Dynasty vs. Cryme Tyme
- Melina vs. Maria vs. Michelle McCool vs. Layla
- WWE Unified Tag Team Title Match: Edge and Jericho © vs. CM Punk and Jeff Hardy
