TNA iMPACT Thoughts 05/01/08

A few days late, but here are some quick thoughts on the 05/01/08 TNA iMPACT show.

Shark Boy and Curry Man vs. the Motor City Machine Guns was a good way to open the show. Plenty of ring action to get things started.

Steiner, Angle and Joe brawling in the ring was a quick and effective segment to put a bit of heat into the PPV match.

They’re really pushing the Knockouts match. I hope they go through with it and actually shave one of the Knockout’s heads.

I don’t understand why they don’t make more use of LAX. They’re a great tag team, they have a smoking valet and they have fans. Hopefully their win against Eric Young and Kaz is the start of a major push. Linking Hector Guerrero to the group might just be the final element.

It’s not that I’m looking forward to a match between Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash, but I love the little teases they’ve been doing ever since Joe won the title.

Somebody please tell me, what is the appeal of the ODB character? I just don’t get it.

There wasn’t really any doubt that AJ Styles was going through against the Rock n Rave Infection, but teaming him up with Super Eric was funny and played off recent events well.

Interesting to see Cheerleader Melissa wrestling Daisy Haze. Most reports have indicated that Melissa is behind the robes as Awesome Kong’s spokeswoman.

Scott Steiner has 131 and 2/3 chance of winning? The math is inescapable… maybe.

Steiner and Petey Williams vs. Kurt Angle and Samoa Joe was a surprisingly good match considering three of these people are scheduled for the next PPV and I was expecting all sorts of nonsense.

I was wondering how long it would be before they put Awesome Kong up against some of the male wrestlers. Looks like TNA’s pulled the trigger.

WWE Wellness Policy Testing Tightened Up

It seems that WWE has increased the rigor of the drug testing component of their Wellness Policy. Previously wrestlers would urinate into a vial in the rest rooms. However now the superstars are required to provide a sample in view of a representative of Aegis Science (the company who perform the drug tests for WWE).

The wrestlers are also required to pull their shirts up above their waists and their pants down to at least their knees. This ensures that no one is using fake bladders or other tricks to cheat the system.

The new testing procedures were specifically designed to prevent wrestlers from working around the tests. Exactly what triggered this tightening is unconfirmed. There are however rumors making the rounds that a WWE developmental talent may have been caught trying to cheat when giving a urine sample.

This new policy has been confirmed in interviews with wrestler Ken Kennedy.

Possible RAW 05/05/08 Spoilers

There are a couple of possible spoilers for this week’s (05/05/08) RAW doing the rounds right now.

The first has it that several ECW talents have been told to show up at RAW this week. At least one version suggests that the entire ECW roster might have been summoned to RAW. If that is the case, it would be safe to assume that WWE has an angle in mind.

It’s being reported that Ken Kennedy worked a tag match at a recent house show partnered with Chris Jericho against William Regal & Snitsky. This along with his actions at RAW last week make it look as though WWE is at least considering a face turn for Kennedy.

Santino Marella May Face DUI Charge

TMZ is reporting that Anthony Carelli who wrestles under the name Santino Marella was arrested at 2:57 AM on May 1st 2008 on suspicion of driving under the influence. Police officers observed Marella’s car drifting back and forth.

On pulling him over they described him as having bloodshot, watery and glassy eyes. Marella performed and failed two field sobriety tests. On being taken to Hilsborough County jail his BAC only registered .061 which is below the legal limit of 0.8, although this test was conducted some 2 hours after his arrest.

Marella who admits to having three Miller Lights and one Kamikaze was released on $500 bail, and could still be charged.

The 29 year old Marella who is a former Intercontinental Champion in the WWE is unlikely to suffer too much for this incident. Although he is receiving plenty of tv time right now, he is not a current champion and this is a relatively minor offense even if he is charged.

WWE has been making a noticeable effort to clean up its image recently, but alcohol is not banned under their “Wellness Program”. Even if WWE was to take action, Santino’s character doesn’t depend on wins in the ring for its appeal.
